The Sloan-Tribby log cabin is an historic structure that dates back to the 1840s. It was discovered in Cass County in 2015, hidden inside a more modern home that had been built around it. The cabin has strong ties to Quantrill, the raid on Lawrence, the Burnt District and General Order No. 11. In 1863, Order No. 11 forced the evacuation of rural areas in four western Missouri counties, and while most homesteads were burned in response to the Order, this 18-by-20-foot cabin was left unscathed.
The cabin was donated to Belton Parks and Recreation in 2017 and currently sits protected in a warehouse, where each board carefully numbered and waiting for reconstruction in Belton’s Memorial Park. When reconstructed, planned for later in 2020, the cabin could host thousands of visitors to see and explore this living history.
Fundraising is underway to help with the project through the Belton Friends of the Park Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization.
